As a 56-year-old who’s feeling better than ever, I can say with confidence that yoga has been my not-so-secret weapon in aging gracefully. Yes, I have some laugh lines and a few extra creaks when I get out of bed. But I’ve learned that beauty is less about how you look and more about how you respond to life’s challenges and come out on the other side—gracefully, or maybe with just a touch of sass.

For over 25 years, I have been a group exercise instructor, leading classes and helping others build strength, endurance, and flexibility. Fitness has been a lifelong passion, and staying active wasn’t just a part of my life—it was woven into my identity. Then, when the pandemic hit, everything changed. Suddenly, I lost both my teaching and my own workout routine. I felt as if the rug had been pulled out from under me, and I wondered how I’d manage without the camaraderie of classes and the rhythm of a schedule.

That’s when yoga became more than just another form of exercise. It became my anchor, grounding me through the uncertainty and keeping me connected to my body and mind. Each time I stepped onto the mat, I found not only strength but a newfound sense of flexibility—both physically and emotionally. Yoga taught me to embrace change, to breathe through challenges, and to find peace in unexpected places. I discovered the versatility of yoga and all the ways it supports physical fitness—from strength and flexibility to balance and cardio. There’s always another pose to try, another variation, a new way to challenge myself. In short, I became brave!

New Seasons of Life and New Purpose:

Now that my kids have grown and flown, I’ve found new purpose in some unexpected places. For one, I’m a volunteer puppy raiser for Guide Dogs of America, which is as heartwarming (and sometimes chaotic) as it sounds.

Yoga’s grounding and patience-building practices are a huge help on the days when the little furball is chewing my furniture and testing my sanity! It’s a beautiful reminder that purpose—and beauty—can be found in service, in letting go of control, giving back, and, yes, in sweeping up puppy hair.

Finding myself single in my 50's, I found a freedom I hadn’t anticipated. Yoga became my steady companion, helping me heal, grow, and discover strength I didn’t know I had. Yoga helped reconnect with myself in ways I didn’t expect. It’s that inner calm, the resilience we develop, and the peace of mind we cultivate that radiate outward. Wrinkles? I like to think of them as wisdom lines! And every time I sink into a deep stretch or balance in a wobbly tree pose, I feel a little stronger and a lot more connected. Plus, with all the breathing exercises, we’ve got the deep, calm breaths ready for any family gathering (we all know the ones).

Embracing Aging with Grace:

Sure, my knees creak more than they used to, but I’ve also got stronger arms for carrying both puppies and groceries. To me, this is aging gracefully. Yoga isn’t just about poses or looking a certain way—it’s about finding that inner calm, resilience, and joy. Yoga has shown me how to show up for myself, embrace every season of life, and find beauty in both the messy and the calm. So here’s to redefining beauty with each breath, each pose, and each puppy-induced giggle!

With yoga, I’ve found that aging gracefully is not only possible; it’s an ever-evolving practice, full of laughter and gratitude along the way. So, for anyone thinking that beauty fades with age, let me just say: with yoga, it simply evolves into something deeper, richer, and way more fun.
